Origin Story – Part Three

In 2007 I was thrilled beyond description to have landed my dream job as a talent agent at one of the major speakers’ bureaus in Manhattan. I had chaired the lecture division of my Campus Activities Board in college and it became a dream of mine to become an agent to represent these incredible personalities for their lecture careers. When I randomly heard about the opportunity I leapt at it.

In my interview, when I introduced myself to the CEO and the President, they immediately commented on how amazing my voice was. I’d only just greeted them and this was the first thing they mentioned! Over the years they asked me to narrate some of the sizzle reels and intro videos we used for our celebrity clients. YES! Every time, without hesitation, YES!

Powered by that experience I started taking VO classes at a renowned studio down the street from our office. I layered a lot of education on top of my natural ability. The staff and instructors at the studio were all the most amazing people. They were passionate about the industry and taught me the artistic, the technical, and the business side of the VO industry.

Ever since then I continued voicing different projects around the agency and occasionally did some projects on my own if something came along by happenstance. I had no idea what was happening at the time but this journey was about to take a weird turn I the best possible way.

I’ve heard a lot of successful people say, “luck is just preparation meeting opportunity.” It’s true. It pays to have experiences, take chances, explore, and learn. Everything becomes arrows in our quiver and the more arrows we have the better chance we have to hit a bullseye.
